Interview and Audition/Portfolio Review Requirements

Dance

WHAT IS ENVISION DANCE LOOKING FOR?

The Envision Dance program is looking for dancers who are passionate and dedicated to the art of dance and who are interested in possibly pursuing dance beyond the bounds of high school.

WHAT WILL THE AUDITION BE LIKE?

The auditions will consist of two parts.

Part I of the audition begins with a traditional two-hour group dance class including barre and across the floor work as well as combinations covering the skills of ballet, jazz, and modern. A dance faculty member demonstrates all of the dance combinations to be executed.

For part II of the audition, each applicant must present a self-choreographed 1 to 2 minute solo routine in ballet, jazz, modern, or a dance form that is representative of his/her talent. The music you choose for the audition solo must be on audiocassette and cued appropriately or on compact disc.

During part II there will also be an informal individual interview with the audition panel to discuss the reasons for entering the Envision program and commitment to the discipline.

The time allotted for part II will be posted on the website as soon as the number of applicant’s auditioning are taken into account. Please do not contact our offices via e-mail or phone.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO THE AUDITION?

Applicants must wear practice clothes; no particular color leotard is required for the audition. Hair must be secured out of the face and the applicant is to wear no jewelry. Applicants must not wear skirts, sweaters, or shirts during the audition. Ballet slippers and jazz shoes are preferred, however, if they are unavailable, socks are acceptable.

WHAT WILL I BE RATED ON DURING THE AUDITION?

Digital/Fine Arts

In the Envision Digital/Fine Arts Conservatory we will be teaching all the necessary technical skills for the students to create quality portfolios, which are necessary to get into art schools. More importantly, the invaluable experience of this program is teaching the students how to ‘see,’ who they are, and how to create from their soul. In order to have a successful experience in this program, the most important qualifications in a student are the proper attitude, commitment, a collaborative spirit, and a willingness to learn, which is why the evaluation process focuses on accessing a potential candidate in those 4 areas.

The candidates must attend a figure drawing workshop with teaching artist Patti Fox (date and time TBA). It is not necessary for students to have any prior skills and all materials will be provided. In this workshop, Envision staff will evaluate students’ attitude, commitment, and willingness to learn.

The candidates must also attend a collaborative street painting workshop with teaching artist Patti Fox (date and time TBA). There will be a ½ hour break for lunch (students must bring their own lunch). Students need to wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Students also need to bring a bottle of drinking water. It is not necessary for students to have any prior skills and all materials will be provided. In this workshop, Envision staff will evaluate students’ attitude, commitment, willingness to learn, and collaborative abilities.
